Home Remedies for Allergies

Allergy is characterized by a sensitivity level that is usually higher than normal to specific substances called allergens. These allergens spark a response in vulnerable individuals and enter the body through numerous routes such as ingestion, inhalation, injection and skin contact.

Causes Responsible for Allergies

Allergic reactions are caused owing to allergy triggers from dust, moulds, pollen grains and food stuffs. Besides these triggers, others include fur and animal proteins that arise from hair. Certain oils found in drugs, cosmetics, plants, chemicals, etc also trigger allergies. Allergies are of two types. Seasonal allergies occur in particular seasons in a year and are caused due to substances such as pollen liberated by grasses, weeds and plants. Perennial allergies are allergies that occur during the whole year due to fungi, mould, indoor dust, and fur of cats, dogs as well as other pets.

Symptoms of Allergies

The symptoms of allergies are skin irritations, breathing problems, running nose, sneezing, wheezing, skin redness, watery eyes, skin itching and rashes. Severe allergies can cause life threatening responses and drop in the blood pressure. A family history also causes allergy. The best way of avoiding allergy symptoms is by preventing exposure to agents that activate allergic responses. Avoiding common allergens such as dust, fur, pollen, specific foods and drugs is essential to prevent allergic reactions.

Home Remedies for Allergies

Home remedies are the best for allergies as there are various drugs that also lead to allergies. Some of the recommended home remedies for allergies are:

Green tea is a natural antihistamine. So drinking one or two cups everyday with honey is effective in reducing cold.

Ensure the honey should be local honey so that when it is added to teas it is effective in reducing the allergy effects.

Drinking one or two cups of chamomile tea with honey reduces the running nose and sore throat. Boil the tea and then add honey. It works as a medicine and as a sweetener.

Crushed ginger and add it to a mug of boiling water. Mix honey as a sweetener and as a remedy as it is an antihistamine and a decongestant. Adding ginger with fresh salads and eating is one of the best ways, provided you like the taste of it.

Garlic stimulates the immune system and is a decongestant and is very effective in suppressing cough.

Peppermint tea relieves congestion and is also effective for sinus problems as well as coughs.

Thyme is wonderful in tea for congestion. It is useful for sinus problems, coughs and stuffy nose.

Oatmeal is very useful. Pouring one cup of boiling water on the oatmeal and leave it for thirty minutes. You should strain it and apply the liquid only on the hives using a cotton ball. This is effective to relieve bug bites. You can make in good quantities and store it in refrigerator and can use it in bathwater as well.

Applying cider vinegar is a very old home remedies that grandmother used on bug bites. Diluting the vinegar with little water and then applying it is effective on bites.

Turmeric powder should be mixed in warm milk with very little sugar or honey as sweetener. This should be had twice or thrice a day to have effect on sinus, cold. Sore throat.

The holy basil leaves taken directly also cuts the cough completely. Even if it is taken mixed with warm water, it has the desired effect.
