Home Remedies for Bronchitis

Bronchitis is in inflammation of the bronchi, or air passage of the lung. When the bronchial tubes, the air passages between the windpipe and the lungs, become infected and swollen, the glands in the mucous membrane that lines the tubes increase the secretion of mucus. The cough characteristic of bronchitis is an attempt to expel the excess fluid. In extreme cases, the infection may extend to the lungs and develop into broncho-pneumonia.

Short term bronchitis, often following an attack of the common cold or influenza is called acute bronchitis. Bronchitis caused by repeated irritation from recurring infection, smoke, dust or other environmental effluence, is termed chronic bronchitis. Either condition is overcome only when the source of irritation has been removed.

Cigarette smoking is a primary cause of chronic bronchitis. Tobacco smoke interferes with the action of the hair like fibers that push mucus from the lungs, allowing the mucus and irritants trapped by the mucus to remain in the lungs.
