Home Remedies for Cough

Cough is a sudden forceful liberation of air from the lungs. Cough is one of best defense mechanisms of the body. Any obstruction or irritation in the passage of airways activates the reflex, and this clears material from breathing passage. Coughs are classified as dry or productive. Minor irritations can initiate the cough reflex. The mucous of the nasal passages drain into the lungs and throat and trigger cough. Cough that has caused due to bronchitis or some identical infection commonly continues for 2 weeks. However, when cough persists for an unusually longer period, it should be evaluated by a doctor.

Common Causes of Cough

A cough is considered serious if it is accompanied by blood or chest pain, or if they experience shortness of breath or breathing difficulty, in case of sudden weight loss, if it is accompanied with fever or abdominal swelling. Some of the very common causes of cough are smoking, common cold as well as other infections; drugs cause persistent dry coughs, stress, allergies, viral or bacterial infection such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, congestive heart failure, asthma, lung cancer, and environmental pollution.

Home Remedies for Cough

Natural home remedies to cure cough are:

Mix half a cup of boiling milk and ½ cup of cold soda and drink slowly.

Take warm cup of milk with 1 spoon of honey and drink.

Mix one tablespoon of sugar in hot milk and mix it with uncooked egg yolk and drink it.

Boil 5 garlic cloves in water and drink the warm water after taking the cloves out.

Eat dried apricots

Drink grapefruit juice with a teaspoon of honey as a sweetener.

Smearing olive oil on the chest reduces the cough.

Mix boiling milk half cup with half cup of cold carbonated water and drink in instantly in small sips to have effective results.

1 tsp of Marjoram in 1 cup of boiling water allows your cough to suppress, provided it is taken three times a day.

Cook ginger root in sweet wine, strain it and drink 3 spoons to eliminate the cough

Lemon grass juice and honey in equal amounts reduces the cough

Mixing one tsp of honey with few drops of brandy also keeps cough under check.

Blanch thyme leaves in water and cover your head with a towel and breathe the steam

Soak almonds overnight in water, peel, grind and add butter and sugar. Eating this 1 or 2 tsps many times a day will give the desired result.

Mix honey and lemon grass juice in equal quantity to reduce cough

Grind 1 tsp dried Ruta Graveolens and 3 tsp dried rosemary leaves with honey and eat one tsp everyday in the morning. Pregnant women can avoid it.

Squeezing basil leaves and adding honey and drinking allows the cough to subside.

Boil 2 garlic cloves in water and add 1tsp of oregano and honey and then drink

Grind a big onion and put it in honey container. Mix it well and drink 1 tsp of this juice twice a day to suppress cough.
