Home Remedies for Fever Blisters

Fever blisters, which are also referred to as cold sores, are small sores which are generally located inside or around the mouth area. Sometimes, they can also be found on the chin, cheeks, on the outside of the nose or in the nostrils. Itching, pain and other forms of irritation can all be caused by fever blisters. They generally last between fourteen to twenty days, but may be able to go away sooner if you know how to take care of them.

Causes of Fever Blisters

Fever blisters are caused by the herpes simplex virus (type 1). They are contagious, which means that they can be spread from person to person. Fever blisters can be spread through touching or kissing someone who has them. Once a person has had fever blisters once, it is not uncommon for them to reoccur over time.

Home Remedies for Fever Blisters

Change your diet when you begin to notice that you have a fever blister. Avoid consuming caffeine, chocolate, oatmeal, peanuts and foods or drinks with a high sodium or acidic content. Diet is known to contribute to fever blister outbreaks.

Make a mixture of salt, which may stimulate healing, and warm water. Use a cotton ball or cloth to wipe your fever blister with the mixture. Do this two to three times a day. Be prepared, it may sting a bit.

Place a warm tea bag on the fever blister. Let it set for about ten minutes. Do this a few times a day until the fever blisters go away.

Eat plain, vanilla yogurt three times a day. This will regulate your PH balance, which is known to contribute to fever blisters.

Before the fever blister has fully developed, apply nail polish remover to use it once to twice a day. It is believed to be effective because the remover will prevent the virus from further development. Once a fever blister has fully developed, avoid this home remedy, as you may experience pain.

Get an ice cube and rub it over the fever blister throughout the day. You should do this at least every two hours. It should help prevent the virus from spreading and will ultimately reduce any pain.

Apply an ice cube or ice to the fever blister once you know that it is beginning to develop. This will prevent the virus from spreading and the fever blister from developing.

Dab Vaseline on the fever blister if you want to prevent it from feeling irritated and bleeding.

Apply either St. John's Wort or Witch Hazel to the fever blister. Not only will both of these things help relieve any pain or irritation, but they will also help with the healing process. Do this several times daily.

Use a cotton ball or cloth to apply Listerine mouthwash to the fever blister before it has fully developed. If you do it afterwards, keep in mind that it may burn quite a bit. You should especially avoid it if your fever blister is bleeding.

Hydrogen peroxide or tooth paste can both be applied to the fever blister with a cotton ball. They are both known to provide relief to any irritation you may feel, or speed up the healing process.
