Home Remedies for Pink Eye

Pink Eye, or Conjunctivitis, most often affects children, but it is possible for it to happen to anyone. Pink Eye is when the membranes that cover the whites of the eyes become red and inflamed. There are both viral and bacterial forms of the condition. Some of the symptoms of Pink Eye include swelling, redness, pain, itching and unusual discharge that may turn to crust overnight.

Causes of Pink Eye

Pink Eye can be caused by a number of different things. Viral and bacterial infections are the most common causes. Pink Eye can also be caused by irritants, such as chlorine, smoke, shampoo or almost any foreign substance that gets in the eye. Allergens can also cause Pink Eye to occur. This tends to be a more common cause of Pink Eye among adults.  When Pink Eye is left untreated, it is generally contagious and can be spread from one person to another. This can happen simply by touching an object that someone with Pink Eye has touched and then rubbing the eye.

Home Remedies for Pink Eye

Apply Chamomile Tea bags to the eyes while they are shut. Leave them on for about 15 minutes. Do this every two to four hours.

Green Tea and Black Tea can both be used the same way as Chamomile Tea.

Mix two to three drops of Eyebright Tincture with a cup of boiled water. Use a cotton ball or cloth to wipe the eye with the mixture. Do this several times daily. This is known to be the most effective home remedy for Pink Eye.

Use cotton balls that have been dipped in warm water to wipe off the crust or discharge that forms in the eye, particularly in the corners. Do this whenever you feel it is necessary.

Mix honey with warm water. Put two drops of the solution in each eye. Do this several times daily. Please note that this is likely to cause you to feel mild to moderate stinging.

Use a solution that is 1/10 Johnson & Johnson Baby shampoo. The rest of the solution should be warm water. You can use a cotton ball to apply this solution to the eye or you can use a hot compress that has been soaked in the solution. Do this once a day.

Soak jasmine flowers in distilled water for eight hours. After it has soaked, remove the jasmine flowers. Put two drops of the solution in each eye. This home remedy is especially recommended if you are having yellow, green or brown discharge. You can do it several times daily.

Clean the eyes with Boric Acid eyes. The best way to do this is by using a cloth, but you can also use a cotton ball. Do this several times a day.

Put one drop of Castor Oil in each eye once a day for every day that you have Pink Eye.

Soak a cloth or cotton balls in boiled salt water (after it has cooled down). Place the cotton balls or cloth over your closed eye and leave it for about ten to fifteen minutes. You can do this several times daily.
