Home Remedies for Poison Ivy

Poison ivy is when a person experiences an allergic reaction, which causes a rash. Some of the symptoms that may come with the rash include moderate to severe itching, red inflammation, blisters and bumps. It is also possible for blisters to become oozy, depending on the specific case of poison ivy. While it may be rare, it is possible for poison ivy to be deadly.

Causes of Poison Ivy

Ultimately, a person will have an allergic reaction to poison ivy if they come in contact with a vine that is also called poison ivy. Once that person becomes infected, he or she may pass poison ivy onto others that they may come in contact with. Although some people may touch the rash caused by poison ivy, they may not have a reaction to it. It is also possible for pets to carry poison ivy and, ultimately, spread it to their owners.

Home Remedies for Poison Ivy

Apply Vicks Vapor Rub to the rash in order to reduce or relieve itching, burning and any other uncomfortable symptoms.

Make a mixture of warm water and salt. Use a cotton ball or cloth to apply it to the area with a rash. It will help relieve symptoms and will ultimately prevent it from spreading any further.

Dab on a small amount of rubbing alcohol with a cotton ball or cloth. It will relieve symptoms and help with drying up the poison.

Apply Listerine mouthwash to the area where the rash is with a cotton ball or cloth. It will help dry out the poison and may provide you with relief.

Use a cotton ball or cloth to apply nail polish remover to the poison ivy rash, which may relieve any uncomfortable symptoms.

Avoid scratching the area with the rash, as this will cause you to spread it further. To prevent yourself from scratching, you may want to consider wearing gloves.

Apply Tea Tree Oil to the area where the rash is. It is believed to promote healing by drying up the poison and will almost definitely help relieve the symptoms you are experiencing.

Take an oatmeal bath and/or use oatmeal soap. The oatmeal is known to provide a good deal of relief to uncomfortable symptoms, particularly itching.

Use a cotton ball or cloth to apply apple cider vinegar to the area where you have a rash. Even though it will stink, most people find that it is worth it.

For immediate relief from poison ivy, rub a banana peel on the rash. Although it will not help dry out the poison, your itching and irritation will stop very quickly. Many consider this the most effective home remedy for poison ivy relief.

Aloe Vera Gel, which is used to treat irritation that the skin experiences due to sunburn, will also provide relief to poison ivy symptoms.

Mix dishwashing liquid with water and apply it to the area with the rash. Leave it on for a few minutes before you rinse it off with warm to cool water.
